While just 3% to 5% of American homes have a fax machine, in Japan, nearly 100% of businesses and 45% to 59% of homes have one. This is due not only to fax machines’ safety and reliability, but also because of the complexities of writing in Japanese and the country’s demographics: in 2010, 23% of the population was 65 or older.
